March 2021
Here at Common Stitch HQ we are a small team.
For the last few years it has just been the two of us, Ali and Charlie, running the show. As we grow as a business, we are also excited to grow our team!
MEET EMILY
Emily joined the Common Stitch team in 2020 and is our amazing graphic designer. If you have sewn one of our recent sewing patterns you will have noticed Emily’s skills in illustrating our step-by-step sewing instructions.
Find out a little more about Emily below and how sewing fits into her everyday life, along with graphic design.
What is your name, occupation + instagram handle?
Emily Thiang, freelance graphic designer, @emilythiang
What is your star sign?
Pisces
What is your coffee / tea order?
Iced espresso or long black coffee, twice a day.
When and how did you learn to sew?
I self-taught myself how to sew at around age 12 or 13 on my parents industrial sewing machine. The machine didn’t work that well and I had no idea what I was doing. Over the years I slowly picked up how to sew properly from sewing patterns, a short course at TAFE and a lot of trial and error.
How does sewing fit into your daily life?
My life wouldn’t be the same without sewing. I alter op shop finds, mend garments, sew new garments and try to sew home furnishings like curtains and dog bed covers. Anything that can be sewed I sew it.
Who are your sewing influencers?
I don’t actually have a lot of sewing influencers but I really enjoy following Faith @faithmaymakes, Stephanie @linen.addict. I mostly admire ethical and sustainably fashion labels and appreciate their amazing creations.
What’s next on your sewing list!
At the moment I am getting the confidence to make my first swimwear set. I usually only sew with woven fabrics so the change to a stretchy fabric frightens me.
